Uganda's research ecosystem is led by Makerere University, East Africa's oldest and most internationally cited institution, which is a leading centre for HIV/AIDS research, malaria, and tropical medicine. Makerere's College of Health Sciences collaborates with NIH, Wellcome Trust, and the Gates Foundation on major clinical trials. The National Agricultural Research Organisation operates 16 research institutes addressing food security across Uganda's diverse agro-ecological zones. Research output has grown sharply, reaching approximately 8,000 annual publications. Mbarara University of Science and Technology has emerged as a regional hub for applied health research and neglected tropical disease science.
