Civil Engineering · Universidad Politecnica de Madrid
Hugo Fernandez is a PhD candidate in Civil Engineering at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, supervised by Prof. Jose Turmo. His thesis develops distributed fibre-optic sensor networks for real-time structural health monitoring of prestressed concrete post-tensioned bridges, combining Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry with data-driven anomaly detection algorithms. Eight publications in Structural Health Monitoring and Engineering Structures document sensor system performance and anomaly detection validation. Hugo collaborated with the Spanish Ministry of Transport on a motorway bridge pilot installation and received an ACES-funded secondment at the University of Stuttgart. He has been recruited by ARUP's structures group in Madrid. His monitoring system has been installed on five Spanish highway bridges and detected two wire-break events before structural failure occurred.
