Mahidol University is Thailand foremost research university in health sciences and biomedical research, tracing its origins to Siriraj Hospital in 1888 and formally named in 1969 after Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health in Thailand. With 17 faculties, 6 colleges, 9 research institutes, and 6 campuses, Mahidol consistently ranks among the top 400 universities globally in QS World University Rankings and holds first place in Thailand in several subject areas including life sciences, medicine, and pharmacology. The Faculty of Science alone employs 289 academic staff, 283 holding doctoral degrees, and publishes more than 500 peer-reviewed papers annually, over half of which appear in first-quartile journals. Mahidol hosts the landmark MIRU initiative focusing on tropical disease research, drug discovery, and translational medicine. The Faculty of Tropical Medicine is one of only a handful of such facilities globally and is a WHO Collaborating Centre. Research covers 12 STEM departments within science alone including Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Microbiology, Pathobiology, Pharmacology, Physics, Physiology, and Plant Science, alongside schools in materials innovation and bioinformatics. Over 40 research groups are active in precision medicine, nanotechnology, and computational biology.
