The University of Ghana (UG) is Ghana oldest and largest university, founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast in affiliation with the University of London, and established as an independent institution upon Ghana independence. Situated at Legon, approximately 12 kilometres northeast of Accra, UG operates as the nation flagship research university with over 60,000 registered students, making it one of West Africa largest higher education institutions. The university consists of four schools and colleges: the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, the College of Humanities, the College of Education, and the College of Health Sciences. UG is internationally distinguished for its School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, operated in partnership with the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, which offers unique degree programmes in Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Engineering — one of only a handful of such programmes in Africa. Research strengths include tropical medicine and infectious diseases, agricultural biotechnology, environmental and climate science, social policy, and African governance studies. UG hosts multiple WHO Collaborating Centres and leads significant NIH-funded research programmes in HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and non-communicable diseases. The university maintains active research partnerships with MIT, Johns Hopkins, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and numerous European universities.
