The University of the Philippines Diliman (UP Diliman) is the Philippines flagship research university and the nation most distinguished institution of higher learning. Established in 1949 as the primary campus of the University of the Philippines system which traces its origins to 1908, UP Diliman hosts 27 degree-granting units, 3,088 faculty members, and enrolls 26,349 students. As the country leading research university, UP Diliman ranked 86th in the QS Asia University Rankings 2025 and consistently leads Philippine universities in research output. From 2020 to 2024, the university managed 345 externally-funded research projects, 391 OVCRD research grants, and over PHP 5.9 billion in total research funding. The National Science Complex (NSC) houses state-of-the-art laboratories in chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science, while the Engineering Complex supports advanced research in electronics, civil, and chemical engineering. Research strengths include applied mathematics, environmental engineering, materials science, computational biology, social development, and indigenous science. UP Diliman is a centre for earthquake engineering research and hosts partnerships with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
