Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is the largest and most prestigious comprehensive higher education and research centre in Vietnam, established in 1993 by merging several leading Hanoi institutions whose academic lineage traces back to the University of Indochina founded in 1906. VNU operates through 12 member universities, 8 research institutes, and 4 affiliated schools spread across 7 campuses in Hanoi. The university has consistently ranked 158th in Asia by QS University Rankings 2026, positioning it as Vietnam leading research institution. VNU research strengths span natural sciences, information technology, materials science, environmental science, and biotechnology. The university trains over 60,000 students annually and awards degrees at undergraduate, master and doctoral levels across more than 100 specialisations. International collaborations with universities in Japan, South Korea, the United States, and Europe drive a growing output of peer-reviewed publications in top STEM journals. VNU hosts several national laboratories and research centres including the Key Laboratory for Electronic Materials and Devices and the Centre for Computational Sciences.
